⚠️ NOTICE ⚠️

This page description ONLY LISTS THE DIFFERENCES between base Collapsing Caves and this version.

This is the Sable description of Collapsing Caves. It does not repeat the parts that stay the same.

For that, go see Collapsing Caves. The other page has the full description.

Player getting pinned by a Cave-In

THIS MOD IS LIKELY TO HAVE BUGS AND ISSUES. REPORT ISSUES TO THE ISSUE TRACKER FOR REGULAR COLLAPSING CAVES BUT SPECIFY IF YOU'RE ON SABLE THE SABLE VERSION.

These parts do not change:

  • How a cave-in starts.
  • The chance of 1 in 512.
  • The warning of 3 seconds.
  • The rules that permit a cave-in.
  • The height limit.
  • The grace period.
  • The cooldown(s).
  • The three sizes and their times and distances.
  • The Gentle enchantment.

Sable & Sable: Ragdolls

Player getting knocked into a hole by a cave-in.

The mod does not start without Sable.

This is the one new mod that you must have.

However, Sable: Ragdolls is supported and recommended.

The Blocks Now Have Physics

This is the largest change.

A Cave-In From Afar

BeforeNow
A block fell straight down at two fifths of the usual speed.A block is a physics body. It turns while it falls.
A block stopped where it landed.A block hits the other blocks that fall with it, it rolls across the ground and it comes to rest where the physics put it.
The blocks made a flat layer. The blocks make a pile. Two cave-ins never give the same pile.

Each piece also receives a turn and a small push when it comes away from the ceiling. The pieces therefore come apart from each other, and they land on a corner and roll.

Groups Of Blocks

A cave-in no longer drops each block on its own. Some pieces are one block. Other pieces are a group of blocks that stay together and move as one body.

  • A piece near the centre of the cave-in is one block more often.
  • A piece near the outer edge is a group more often. A group holds a way out of the cave better than the same number of single blocks, because single blocks roll away from each other.
  • A group starts above a corridor or a way out more often than above a large open space. A cave-in can therefore close the ways out and hold you inside it.
  • The first seconds give the largest groups. A large group stays inside a box of 4 blocks on each axis and can hold as many as 64 blocks. Later pieces are smaller.

The mod keeps approximately 300 blocks as physics blocks while a cave-in continues. Above that number, the oldest blocks go back into the world to make room for the new ones. This keeps the speed of the server.

The Blocks Go Back Into The World

This is new. The blocks do not stay physics blocks for all time.

  • The blocks stay physics blocks while the cave-in continues.
  • They then go back into the world as usual blocks, in the position where they came to rest.
  • This work waits until every player is outside the cave-in.
  • The work then puts the blocks back a few at a time. A small cave-in needs 8 seconds, a medium one needs 15 seconds and a large one needs 23 seconds.
  • A player who comes back inside the cave-in stops the work. The work continues when that player leaves again. You therefore never see a block change in front of you.
  • Each piece turns and moves into its final position across half of one second. The blocks do not jump into place.
  • A sound plays while this work continues, and it stops with the last block.

The blocks are also safe from a stop of the server. The mod writes a record with each piece into the world file. A piece from an earlier session comes back into the world when you return to that place.

Damage

The damage of a falling block is different. For this version, being hit by blocks does 1 heart of damage only.

The block must move at decent speed to harm you. This speed is the momentum built up when a block falls a height of one and one half blocks or more. A block at rest does no damage.

The blocks that lie on you are the greater danger. If the blocks cover you, suffocation causes more damage.

New Things To See And Hear

A cave-in now changes the air and the ground around you.

  • White ash falls inside the cave-in while it continues.
  • Dust comes up from a part of the floor inside the cave-in.
  • Fog fills the air. The fog is thin at the start and becomes thicker across the first 8 seconds, because the dust comes from the blocks that fall. It goes away across 14 seconds after the cave-in ends.
  • The ash, the dust and the fog are inside the cave-in only. A player above the cave, or below it, sees none of them.
  • A block that hits the ground can make a gust of air.
  • A block that lands beside you moves the camera, in the manner of the movement that damage gives it.

Motion sickness mode now stops the movement of the camera from a block as well as the shake of the screen.

Configuration

The settings file has a new name and more settings in it.

The new settings control these things:

  • The number of physics blocks and the time that they need to go back into the world
  • The size of the groups, and where in the cave-in they come away
  • The turn and the push of the falling blocks
  • The white ash, the dust from the floor, the fog and the gust of air
  • The movement of the camera, and the ragdolls

Some settings are for your game only. The white ash, the dust, the fog and the movement of the camera are of this kind, and each player can hold a value of their own for them.
